Ludus latrunculorum, an ancient Roman strategy game, is considered a precursor to modern chess. Played on a board similar to chess, it involved capturing opponent pieces. Variants existed, with different numbers of pieces and rules for movement and capture. The game was popular in military circles, with many boards found in Roman forts. Artifacts related to the game, including tokens made from various materials, can be seen at the Principia Museum in Alba Iulia, where visitors can also play replicas of the game.
