Romania is introducing savings accounts for retirement, modeled after US accounts like 401(k) and IRA. The budget committee has prepared a preliminary report for a legislative project that establishes the legal framework for these accounts, called Conturi de Economii și Investiții (CEI). Participants will invest in capital market securities and choose between two tax regimes: one with tax deductibility and taxation upon withdrawal, and another without deductibility and tax-free withdrawals.
