A former Ecuadorian president, Abdala Bucaram, and his son were sentenced to prison for selling illegal COVID-19 tests and medical equipment. They received sentences of nine years and four months, while others involved received varying sentences. The court found them guilty of being part of a criminal organization that profited during the health emergency. Bucaram, who was hospitalized, attended the hearing via video link. The illegal sales included around 21,000 tests and other medical supplies, sold without proper documentation. Bucaram had previously been in exile for corruption charges before returning to Ecuador in 2017.
