One year after production ceased, the Hunedoara steel plant, now owned by UMB Steel, is undergoing cleaning and maintenance. Approximately 80 workers are currently on-site, with many former employees hoping for a return to industrial activity. The plant, which had operated for nearly 150 years, was closed in September 2025 due to financial losses and competitive pressures. UMB Steel acquired the plant's assets in early 2026, and while production has not resumed, efforts are being made to clean the site and maintain equipment. The high cost of energy remains a significant concern for future operations, and many former workers are still seeking employment. Union leaders express cautious optimism about potential investments and a revival of production in the future.
