Starting in 2027, Formula 1 races will be shorter, with the standard distance reduced from 305 km to 290 km. This change will decrease the number of laps by two or three. Additionally, the FIA has decided to remove the three-hour time limit for races, allowing for more flexibility during interruptions. The existing two-hour limit for the race duration will remain, but races can be paused due to disruptive events. The aim is to enhance the viewing experience for fans. Organizers will also have increased flexibility to extend practice sessions if interrupted. Furthermore, the gearbox homologation requirement will be lifted, promoting development freedom for suppliers.
