Starting next year, Finland will stop maintaining high-voltage infrastructure used by Russia for international internet traffic, forcing Russian telecom operators to find alternative routes. Fingrid, the Finnish grid operator, has informed Russian telecoms that it will cease maintenance of the high-voltage poles supporting fiber optic cables. This decision follows the halt of electricity exports from Russia to Finland in 2022, making the maintenance of these lines economically unjustifiable. Approximately 60-70% of Russia's international internet traffic was redirected through Finland, and Russian telecom companies are currently negotiating with Finnish providers for alternative routes to avoid disruption. This move comes amid increasing pressure on Russia's digital infrastructure, with recent EU sanctions targeting Russian social media and communication platforms.
