Finland has granted a license for the world's first underground nuclear waste repository, marking a significant milestone in nuclear waste management. The facility, operated by Posiva Oy, meets safety requirements set by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). Although the license has been issued, operations cannot commence until further safety confirmations are made. The repository will store high-level nuclear waste in canisters deep underground, ensuring isolation from the environment. STUK will continue to monitor the facility's safety throughout its operation.
