A permanent storage facility for spent nuclear fuel is being developed in Finland, located over 400 meters underground at Olkiluoto. Named ONKALO, it features multiple barriers to isolate radioactive material, ensuring long-term safety. The Finnish company Posiva is responsible for the project, which includes drilling vertical shafts for final waste disposal. The first shaft is currently being drilled, measuring 8.4 meters deep. ONKALO aims to securely contain nuclear waste for approximately 100,000 years, addressing geological safety concerns. The facility is still under construction and will transition to waste storage in the coming decades.
