The film "Fjord" by Cristian Mungiu has been unanimously selected as Romania's entry for the 2027 Oscars after winning the Palme d'Or. This selection does not guarantee a nomination, as the film must pass through the Academy's selection stages, with the shortlist announced on December 15, 2026. Previously, the only Romanian film nominated for an Oscar was the documentary "Colectiv" in 2021. Mungiu expressed optimism about the film's chances if supported by an American distributor and the Romanian audience. Despite its accolades, the path to nomination remains challenging, emphasizing the need for a strong campaign.
