Intensive poultry farming may increase the spread of Campylobacter, a common bacterium causing gastroenteritis, according to an Oxford University study. The research analyzed 2,800 bacterial genomes from chickens and wild birds across 30 countries from 1979 to 2024, revealing a more than 100-fold increase in Campylobacter spread due to industrial farming. The global chicken population has surged sevenfold since the 1960s, creating conditions for bacteria to thrive and adapt. The study emphasizes the need for biosecurity measures and monitoring to mitigate public health risks associated with antibiotic resistance and foodborne illnesses.
