The low flow of the Danube is disrupting the ecological balance in the Danube Delta, allowing saltwater intrusion up to 25 kilometers upstream. This phenomenon poses significant risks, including water quality degradation and threats to drinking water supplies. While the water level at Sfântu Gheorghe remains navigable due to the Black Sea's influence, the reduced current speed facilitates the advance of saline water. The situation could lead to eutrophication and affect local water supply if saline water reaches intake areas. Historical precedents show that similar conditions have previously impacted water availability.
