Pregnant women in Romania will now have the right to a companion and privacy during labor and childbirth, following a law adopted by Parliament. This legislation mandates that healthcare facilities ensure the dignity and privacy of women, including visual separation during these processes. The law, initiated by USR senator Ruxandra Cibu Deaconu, aims to address issues of obstetric violence and has received bipartisan support. It also stipulates that newborns should not be separated from their mothers unless medically necessary, and emphasizes the importance of early mother-infant contact and breastfeeding. The project is now set for presidential promulgation.
