A legislative initiative has been introduced in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies to eliminate VAT on essential hygiene products such as menstrual pads, diapers, and condoms. The proposal aims to alleviate financial burdens on families and address menstrual poverty. Deputies Dumitriţa Albu and Aurora Simu from the UNIT party emphasize that these hygiene products are necessities, not luxuries. The initiative aligns with EU Directive 2022/542, allowing member states to apply preferential tax treatments for essential goods. The proposed VAT exemption would apply directly at the point of sale without requiring proof of income or personal circumstances.
