President Nicușor Dan has enacted a law that abolishes high schools' ability to conduct their own entrance exams in addition to the National Evaluation. This legislative change modifies Article 101 of the pre-university education law and ends a system that allowed schools to hold their own admission competitions for some available spots. The 2023 education law had initially permitted certain high schools to organize their own entrance exams for up to half of their available places, but this implementation was postponed. An amendment was adopted in the Chamber of Deputies, eliminating the possibility of additional entrance exams altogether. The organization Save the Children Romania expressed concerns that allowing schools to conduct their own exams perpetuates educational inequalities and benefits students from families who can afford tutoring. A survey indicated that 43% of students aged 10 to 17 engage in tutoring, with higher rates among middle school students.
