Extinderea UE: Comisia Europeană vrea să dea un nou impuls unui proces care își pierde elanul (Analiză Le Monde)
The European Commission has proposed measures to facilitate Ukraine's integration into the EU, highlighting the geopolitical interest in expansion after Russia's invasion. Despite initial enthusiasm, political momentum has waned due to economic stagnation and rising far-right sentiments. The Commission aims to prepare for a Union with over 30 members, addressing concerns about democratic backsliding in candidate countries. Special safeguards are proposed for new members to ensure adherence to EU values. The integration of Ukraine poses significant challenges, particularly regarding agricultural policies and funding. The Commission plans to present individualized roadmaps for candidate countries, emphasizing that no preferential treatment will be given. Decision-making processes within the EU will also need adjustments to accommodate more members, with proposals to reduce the number of commissioners and shift towards qualified majority voting.
