This action aims to prevent a potential plagiarism verdict from the National Defense University, where he obtained his doctorate in 2003. The Ministry of Education awarded him the title, and recent reports indicate that a significant portion of his thesis may have been improperly sourced. Pahonțu's legal move is seen as an attempt to affirm the legitimacy of his doctoral title amidst ongoing investigations. He is the second intelligence chief to challenge the Ministry over similar allegations, following Gabriel Vlase's case.
