Romania has sent four air defense systems to Rheinmetall for modernization, aimed at enhancing drone combat capabilities. The first two systems failed acceptance tests, leading to penalties for delays. The new delivery date is set for September 2026. The modernization includes advanced components to improve detection and interception of aerial threats. Romania currently uses the MEROPS system for drone detection and has plans to acquire additional C-UAS systems. The Skynex system, used by Ukraine, has shown effectiveness against drones, and Romania's modernization incorporates similar technologies.
