In 2025, Romania had the highest percentage in the EU of people unable to afford a substantial meal every two days, at 18.1%. This figure is more than double the EU average of 8.5%. Romania also ranked last in the EU for the ability to pay for internet access and annual vacations, with 6.2% and 61.4% of the population respectively unable to afford these. The report from Eurostat highlights significant disparities in living conditions across EU member states, with Romania facing severe material and social deprivation at 16.8%. Additionally, 92.7 million Europeans were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2025, a slight decrease from the previous year.
