David Popovici was awarded the title of best swimmer in Europe for 2025 by European Aquatics during the 2026 Senior Swimming Championships in Paris, where he won gold in both the 100m and 200m freestyle events. The award ceremony was led by European Aquatics president Antonio Silva. Popovici, who is turning 22 soon, had an outstanding year in 2025, including two gold medals at the World Championships in Singapore and three medals at the Youth European Championships in Samorin.
