The European Union is increasingly focusing on underwater infrastructure, vital for economy and security, with significant investments in maritime defense. The production value of European maritime defense equipment is projected to reach €117.8 billion from 2016 to 2025, with a notable increase following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Over 95% of international digital traffic relies on submarine infrastructure, while maritime transport accounts for a large portion of EU imports and exports. The EU is also addressing threats from drones and autonomous vehicles, investing in AI and sensor technologies for maritime monitoring. This shift is particularly relevant for Romania, enhancing security in the Black Sea region.
