The mayor of Bucharest, Ciprian Ciucu, is awaiting a response from the EBRD regarding a loan request of up to 350 million euros for public transport investments. This funding aims to co-finance a 1.65 billion euro modernization program for public transport, which includes tram network upgrades and trolleybus purchases. The STB faces significant financial issues, with debts of around 3 billion lei, leading to its insolvency. Currently, the public transport fleet is aging, with less than half of the vehicles being modern. The PMB budget for 2026 allocates over 1 billion lei for public transport modernization.
