The massive expansion of offshore wind farms in the North and Baltic Seas may alter precipitation patterns in coastal Europe, according to a climate simulation study. Researchers found that while precipitation could increase above wind farms, it may decrease onshore. The study, led by Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, indicates that wind turbines can reduce wind speed, affecting heat and moisture exchange. By 2050, precipitation over wind farm areas could rise by 12-18%, while coastal regions in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands may see reductions of up to 15%. The authors emphasize that significant effects are expected only with extensive offshore wind development.
