Thailand's sugar production is expected to drop by at least 17% next season, impacting global supply amid drought conditions. The Thai Sugar Millers Corp predicts production could fall below 10 million tons in 2026-2027, down from 12 million tons previously. As the second-largest sugar exporter, Thailand's decline coincides with the intensifying El Nino phenomenon, which has led to reduced rainfall in key production areas. This has caused sugar futures prices to rise significantly. Meanwhile, India is also facing lower monsoon rainfall, contributing to a projected global sugar deficit of around 260,000 tons. The FAO reported a rise in global food prices, with sugar prices increasing by 11.9% in August due to adverse weather and supply concerns.
