Romanians are reducing their consumption, with retail sales dropping by 6.1% in July compared to the same month in 2025. Despite a slight monthly increase of 0.8% from June, driven mainly by fuel sales, the overall trend indicates a decline in consumer spending. The government’s austerity measures, led by former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, are expected to continue affecting the economy negatively. Year-on-year data shows significant decreases across all major product categories, particularly non-food items, which fell by 6.7%. The retail sector's performance is a crucial indicator of consumer behavior, and the ongoing pressure on spending remains high.
