The Ebola outbreak has resulted in 1,001 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, according to the World Health Organization. The DRC reported 999 deaths and 2,473 confirmed cases since mid-May. Uganda has recorded two deaths and 20 confirmed cases, but authorities claim no new cases exist. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, lacks available vaccines or treatments. A clinical trial for two treatments began in July, and the WHO has authorized emergency use of a diagnostic test. The crisis is centered in Ituri province, which accounts for the majority of cases and deaths.
