Their relationship deteriorated over the past year, leading to a divorce process. On September 28, he shot himself in his wife's home, leaving a farewell message on social media. Gheorghe had encouraged Irina to pursue a career in refereeing, expressing pride in their shared passion for football. In his final message, he cited emotional distress from their conflicts, stating he felt he could no longer make her happy. He asked Irina to care for their three daughters after his death.
