E oficial.
The Romanian government has decided to extend the operation of three coal-fired power units beyond the August 31 deadline due to an energy crisis. This extension could lead to penalties of at least 124 million euros, as Romania had committed to closing these units by 2026 under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The decision is justified by a severe hydrological deficit and increased energy demand. However, a new law may prevent any coal unit closures until alternative capacities are available, potentially jeopardizing previous commitments and risking a loss of one billion euros in funding.
