The Danube River is experiencing exceptionally low water levels due to prolonged drought in Central and Eastern Europe, as reported by the EU. At the end of August 2026, the river's flow at the Romanian border dropped to about 1,600 cubic meters per second, significantly below the average of 3,900 cubic meters per second for that month. This reduction has narrowed navigable channels in several sections of the river. High-resolution images from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite show extensive sandbanks exposed along the riverbed, particularly near islands and both banks. These images aid in monitoring changes in watercourses and sediment exposure during drought periods.
