New Zealand has approved the prescription of pharmaceutical-grade MDMA for severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), becoming the second country to do so after Australia. The treatment will be administered in a controlled clinical setting alongside psychotherapy, with patients required to be at least 18 years old. Vice Prime Minister David Seymour emphasized the need for innovative treatments for PTSD, which can severely impact lives. While studies in other countries have shown potential benefits of MDMA, the FDA in the United States has not yet approved its medical use, citing insufficient evidence of safety and efficacy. Current PTSD treatments in the U.S. are limited to two antidepressants that take months to show effects.
