Reach, the owner of Daily Mirror and Daily Express, announced the elimination of 220 editorial positions due to declining online traffic and increased use of AI-generated news summaries. The company will also close three online-only publications that failed to establish a strong regional presence. This decision follows previous layoffs, totaling over 300 positions. David Higgerson emphasized the need to adapt to significant changes in audience content consumption, focusing on original journalism and distinctive brands. Additionally, around 60 new positions will be created to boost digital revenue, with a shift towards subscriptions and long-form videos. Higgerson noted that competition from BBC has impacted local content engagement.
