The EU has agreed to remove Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from its sanctions list, despite Ukraine's objections. This decision follows complex negotiations among member states and includes a three-year extension of sanctions for around 3,000 other individuals and entities. Usmanov and Fridman were sanctioned in February 2022 due to their close ties to the Kremlin and support for Russian authorities. Ukrainian President Zelensky urged EU members to maintain pressure on Russian businessmen to end the war. The compromise faced opposition from Latvia but was ultimately accepted, allowing the removal of the two billionaires while extending sanctions on others.
