The National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS) released documents detailing Romanian emigration to West Germany during the late communist era. Between 1987 and 1989, over 47,000 Romanians applied to emigrate, with significant numbers from Brașov. The regime allowed around 35,000 departures, while many sought illegal escape routes. Notably, 5,536 Romanians successfully evaded border controls, and 484 were caught attempting to flee. The documents reveal the bureaucratic challenges faced by emigrants, with Sibiu having the highest number of blocked applications. The release highlights the desperate measures taken by individuals to leave Romania during a time of oppression.
