The Danube-Bucharest Canal, touted as a major achievement of Ceaușescu's regime, faced severe issues such as worker shortages, inadequate housing, and food scarcity. Reports from the Security Service reveal that conditions for laborers were deplorable, with many living in unheated barracks and lacking basic amenities. Despite the official narrative linking the project to Ceaușescu's vision, the idea dates back to the 1880s. Construction began in 1986, but by 1988, only a fraction of the required workforce was present, and many machines were non-operational due to a lack of fuel and parts. The situation worsened with insufficient food supplies, leading to worker dissatisfaction and some leaving the site without permission. Problems persisted until the regime's collapse in late 1989.
