The Danube-Bucharest Canal, touted as a major achievement during Ceaușescu's regime, faced severe labor shortages, inadequate supplies, and poor living conditions for workers. Reports from the Security Service reveal a stark contrast between official propaganda and the actual situation on-site. Although the canal was intended to connect Bucharest to the Danube, its construction began in 1986 but was plagued by logistical issues. Workers lived in deplorable conditions, lacking basic amenities and sufficient food. By late 1989, many workers were dissatisfied, leading to some abandoning the project. Ultimately, the canal project was abandoned after the 1989 Revolution, remaining unfinished and unfulfilled.
