Day meticulously planned the crime, inspired by the TV show Dexter. Maria had dreams of starting a family and was deeply loved by her relatives. On the night of her death, she attempted to call her cousin, who regrets not answering. Maria, originally from Alexandria, Teleorman, had recently lost her mother and was living alone in the UK. Day stabbed her 78 times and attempted to dismember her body before calling emergency services, claiming he was injured by an animal. He was arrested and pleaded guilty to her murder.
