Romania will eliminate bridge tolls over the Danube starting October 1, 2026, as part of a new road tax system. The interim Minister of Transport, Radu Miruță, announced that the new system will replace existing tolls with a more equitable model based on vehicle emissions and distance traveled. The TollRo system will apply to trucks and heavy vehicles, while light vehicles will have their road tax linked to pollution levels. The current bridge tolls, which vary in cost, will no longer be required. Additionally, the implementation of TollRo is expected to be postponed until April 2027 due to ongoing pilot testing and operational challenges. This change aims to streamline road usage fees and improve efficiency in resource allocation within the transport sector.
