Italy leads an international ranking of the most spectacular rock-hewn cities, with Sassi di Matera recognized as the most impressive. UNESCO recognition in 1993 transformed the area into a tourist destination with boutique hotels and art galleries. Matera also served as a filming location for 'No Time to Die' from the James Bond series.
