In 1941, Germany and Romania sign a treaty granting Romania administration over Transnistria, a move orchestrated by Hitler. This region became a site of ethnic cleansing under Antonescu's regime. In 1991, a failed coup by hardline Communist leaders aimed to halt Gorbachev's reforms, but Boris Yeltsin's resistance led to its collapse, diminishing Gorbachev's power and contributing to the USSR's dissolution.
