Parisians rise against Nazi forces after four years of occupation, as Allied troops approach the city. Armed citizens establish barricades and capture buildings and military equipment. In 1941, Germany and Romania sign a treaty granting Romania administration over Transnistria, a move orchestrated by Hitler. This region became a site of ethnic cleansing under Antonescu's regime. In 1991, a failed coup by hardline Communist leaders aimed to halt Gorbachev's reforms, but Boris Yeltsin's resistance led to its collapse, diminishing Gorbachev's power and contributing to the USSR's dissolution.
