The PISA 2025 results reveal that Romanian students aged 15 are significantly underperforming in reading, mathematics, and science, with over half failing to meet minimum competency levels. The average scores for Romania are 425 in science, 413 in reading, and 419 in mathematics, all below the OECD average. Notably, 52% of students do not reach the minimum level in mathematics, while 48% fall short in reading. The report highlights a concerning trend of declining literacy skills, particularly in reading, which has seen a significant drop since 2022. Additionally, socioeconomic disparities are evident, with students from advantaged backgrounds scoring much higher than their disadvantaged peers. The new digital problem-solving assessment shows that 57% of Romanian students are below the basic proficiency level.
