In the first quarter of 2026, insurance companies in Romania paid around 2.3 million lei for damages caused by homeowners to neighbors. The payments were made under the legal liability clause included in optional home insurance policies. The largest individual compensation was 57,000 lei, with significant payouts occurring in Ilfov, Sibiu, Dâmbovița, Cluj, and Bucharest. The legal liability clause covers damages when a homeowner is responsible for incidents like broken pipes or faulty installations that affect others. Only 20% of homes in Romania have optional insurance, which differs from mandatory insurance that covers specific natural disasters. UNSAR represents 23 companies covering over 90% of the local insurance market.
