Chinese researchers have developed a method for separating crude oil components at room temperature, potentially reducing energy consumption in refining by 91%. This technique, termed "molecular refining," utilizes chemical membranes that selectively allow certain molecules to pass while retaining others. Laboratory tests showed the method could effectively separate a mixture of oil into high-value products with an 85-90% recovery rate. Traditional refining processes are energy-intensive, involving repeated heating and condensation, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The feasibility of scaling this new method for industrial use remains uncertain, but it could lead to lower energy costs and emissions in the oil refining industry.
