Researchers have identified 36 genes significantly linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and chronic tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome, expanding the understanding of their genetic basis. The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, analyzed genetic data from nearly 4,000 individuals with OCD, tic disorders, or both. Previously, only four genes were strongly associated with these conditions. The analysis revealed a substantial overlap between the genetic factors of OCD and tic disorders, with many genes showing high expression in brain regions involved in impulse control and habit formation. The findings suggest potential for developing targeted treatments based on genetic profiles.
