A new therapy for periodontitis utilizes light to target harmful bacteria without affecting beneficial microorganisms. Developed by researchers at Nagoya University, it shows promising results in lab and animal tests, pending human evaluation. The method employs near-infrared photoimmunotherapy, initially designed for cancer treatment, adapted to target Porphyromonas gingivalis, a key bacteria in periodontitis. This targeted approach aims to improve oral health with less invasiveness compared to traditional treatments, which often harm beneficial bacteria. Further human trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety.
