A short video confirmed the presence of sand cats in Libya, marking the first documented evidence of this elusive species in the country. Photographer Mohammed Almuntasir captured the footage in 2017, although he had previously seen the cats at night. Despite isolated reports, sand cats had never been officially recognized in Libya until now. Almuntasir collaborated with expert Firas Hayder for eight years to document these cats and their behavior, leading to a published study. Sand cats are nocturnal hunters, adept at surviving in harsh desert conditions, and remain difficult to study due to their elusive nature.
