Recent findings on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi reveal that prehistoric hunter-gatherers used betel nuts much earlier than previously thought. Betel nut, derived from the areca palm, is the fourth most widely used psychoactive substance globally. Traditionally, it is chewed with lime to enhance the effects of arecoline, leading to euphoria and increased alertness. Archaeologists believed drug use began around 13,000 years ago with the advent of agriculture, but evidence now suggests that betel nut consumption dates back between 25,000 and 16,000 years. This indicates a long-standing tradition of psychoactive substance use among early humans.
