An international research team has developed a blood test-based tool to differentiate between heart attack and Takotsubo syndrome, particularly in postmenopausal women. This condition, often triggered by intense emotional or physical stress, mimics heart attack symptoms but does not involve coronary artery blockage. The new diagnostic system, BioTAK, combines biological sex and specific biomarkers to aid clinical decision-making. In a validation study with nearly 1,800 patients, BioTAK accurately classified almost 90% of cases before invasive procedures. The identified biomarkers also provide insights into the biological mechanisms distinguishing Takotsubo from traditional heart attacks. Future evaluations will assess BioTAK's integration into routine medical practice.
