Descoperire arheologică importantă la Alba Iulia: Poarta principală a fortificației romane de la Apulum, scoasă la lumină după 2.000 de ani, în contextul săpăturilor de pe bastionul Capistrano

Recent archaeological excavations at the Alba Carolina Citadel have uncovered the Porta Praetoria, the main entrance of the Roman fort of Legio XIII Gemina. This significant find, led by archaeologist Anca Timofan, reveals a foundation platform of a gate tower at a depth of four meters. The Porta Praetoria, located on the eastern side of the fort, is believed to have been flanked by two imposing rectangular towers and featured a central wall with two access arches. The discovery also confirms the reuse of Roman structures in the medieval period, as the foundations were integrated into the later Saint George Gate. This continuity was previously suggested in 17th-century accounts, linking the Roman and medieval entrances.
