British MPs have rejected a bill to legalize assisted dying for terminally ill patients, despite two-thirds of the public supporting the initiative. The Commons voted 286 against and 270 in favor, maintaining the current ban. The proposed legislation would have allowed adults with terminal illnesses and a life expectancy of six months or less to end their lives with medical assistance, pending approval from a specialist committee. The bill's failure halts the latest attempt to change the law, which has been debated for decades. Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously stated that the discussion should wait until improvements are made to palliative care and social support systems. A recent Ipsos poll indicated that while many support assisted dying, some conditions apply regarding funding for palliative care.
