Romania's budget deficit reached 59.42 billion lei in the first eight months of 2026, significantly lower than last year. Revenues increased faster than expenditures, but interest costs remain a concern. Tax revenues, particularly from VAT, saw substantial growth. Despite a reduced deficit, interest expenses rose by nearly 27%. Investment spending also increased, largely due to EU-funded projects, with Romania receiving more funds from the EU and other donors.
