August 31 is celebrated as Romanian Language Day in Romania and Moldova, and from 2026, it will be officially recognized in Ukraine. The date is linked to the national revival movement in Moldova during the late 1980s, which sought the return to the Latin alphabet and the official recognition of the Romanian language. A significant event occurred on August 27, 1989, when hundreds of thousands gathered in Chișinău to demand these changes. The Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan SSR adopted legislation on August 31, 1989, establishing Romanian as the state language. In 2013, Romania officially recognized this day, and in March 2023, Moldova reaffirmed its linguistic identity by replacing 'Moldovan language' with 'Romanian' in legislation. President Zelensky of Ukraine signed a decree in March 2023 to recognize this day, enhancing cultural cooperation between Ukraine and Romania.
